What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is the world's most widely used standard for quality management. It sets out how to run your business so that you consistently deliver what your customers expect: understanding their requirements, controlling the way work gets done, dealing with problems when they happen, and improving over time. It doesn't tell you how to do your job. It asks you to show that you have a sensible, controlled way of doing it, and evidence that you follow it.
Who needs it?
- Contractors and subcontractors who need ISO 9001 to get onto tender lists and approved supplier lists
- Manufacturers and fabricators supplying larger customers who audit their suppliers
- Businesses bidding for public sector work, where quality certification is often scored or required
- Growing firms that need consistency as they take on more staff, sites or customers
Business benefits
How SBMS helps
- Gap analysisWe review how you work today against each requirement of ISO 9001 and give you a prioritised action list.
- DocumentationWe write your quality policy, objectives and process maps, plus only the procedures and records you actually need.
- ImplementationYour team starts using the system day to day, with training so everyone understands their part.
- Internal auditWe audit the system and support your first management review, closing gaps before the external audit.
- Certification supportWe help you choose a UKAS-accredited certification body and support you through the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits.
- Ongoing maintenanceWe keep the system working through annual surveillance audits and three-yearly recertification.
Typical timescales
For most small and medium-sized businesses, it takes three to six months to go from gap analysis to certification audit. Firms with good existing processes can move faster, while multi-site or more complex operations take longer. You'll get a realistic timeline once the gap analysis is done.
